How We Make 3D Printing Filament & Quality Control

Preparation
Before filament production starts, there are some procedures need to be done to ensure a smooth production process and qualified filament products. 
  • IQC: Materials must be inspected when they arrive our factory. Which doesn’t pass IQC will be rejected and asked for replacement. Resins must be clean. 
  • Mix resins, pigment and additive properly. This is an important process because all of our printing filaments have their custom formulation that we developed to improve printing experiences. Our engineering team spent almost a year on developing and conducting hundred times experiments and printing tests. The PLA filament and ABS filament you purchase now are the most suitable printing filaments for majority of 3d printers in the market. 
  • Get packing materials ready such as spools(reels), vacuum bag and desiccants.
  • Key points:Make sure everything is prepared so filament can be right packed once done. 

 

Step One
  • Pour resins into hopper dryer, dry the materials at required temperature and time period. For example, PLA resins need to be dried for 3 hours at temperature range 70-80 degree. This step is extremely important, some manufacturer might skip it to save production time. However, some problems are caused if materials not dried, such as filament jams or filament bubbles. 

  • Get extruding machine heated and set up temperature for each section. 
  • Materials are mixed and extruded. 
  • Key points: temperature is extremly important, it directly influences the result of filaments. 
  • Key points: different materials require different working temprature. All this require skilled experiences, numerous experiments and being familiar with material's characteristics. 

 
Step Two 
  • Extruded filament passes through three water tanks. This is also important because wrong water temperature will make oval filament. 
  • In order to shape good filament, temperature and length of each water tank is essential. 
 
Step Three
  • IPQC: Filament gets through diameter inspector, the inspectior detects if filament's diameter is within tolerance or not. For Sun Top's 3d printing filament, our diameter tolerance is +/-0.03mm, any diameter detected to be over +/-0.03mm, the inspector would give warning alarm. Once warning alarm is triggered, filament that is not qualified gets cut off and eliminated. Although our criterion says 1.75+/-0.03mm, we devote ourselves to maintaining dimension within 1.75+/-0.01mm. We keep surpassing ourselves. 
  • Key point: Diameter is strictly monitored and controlled. 
 
 
Step Four
FQC: Double check diameter of 3d filament by vernier caliper and apperance of 3d filament. 
FQC: We also print test our 3d filaments to check if the printing works well. 
Coil good filament, put 3d filament and desiccant in bag, vacuum seal the bag and put the filament in box. 
OQC: confirm color, quantity, material based on customer's order request, make sure we ship out the right products.
